Visualizing Literature

These maps show narrative trends in famous pieces of literature through a visual system that overlays each chapter of text with the previous chapter. The result is a map describing how each of these different authors narrates a story. Parts that extend higher are longer and typically more descriptive, while shorter line lengths typically denote moments of back and forth dialogue. The books mapped here are Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, and Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Whereas The Great Gatsby map undulates from beginning to end, Heart of Darkness is almost perfectly rectangular, a testament to its descriptiveness and comparatively minimal dialogue. More to come.
